What is apostilling a document?

Apostilling a document in the United States with the Hague Convention is the process of legalizing a document that was issued by a U.S. entity or a Notary Public for international validity.

As established in the Hague Convention, several Latin American countries that are part of this agreement accept the apostille, including Argentina, Bolivia, Venezuela, Colombia, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Peru, Mexico, Dominican Republic, and others.

The apostille is a certificate issued by the Department of State or Secretary of State authenticating the signature and seal of a public official on the document or of a Notary Public. This process is necessary to use the document in countries that are party to the Hague Convention.

What is the purpose of apostilling a document for?

Study abroad: When you want to use your academic degrees or educational certificates in another country, the apostille guarantees the authenticity and validity of those documents.

Legal Procedures: In cases of marriage, adoption, divorce or succession, it may be necessary to apostille documents such as birth, marriage or death certificates, to be accepted in the country where the procedure will be carried out.

Contracts and international business: If you are involved in an international commercial transaction, it may be necessary to apostille commercial contracts, powers of attorney or other legal documents to be valid in other countries.

Migration: When migrating to another country, you may be asked to apostille documents such as criminal records, education certificates, employment certificates, and others, so that they can be recognized and accepted in the new country of residence.

These state officials act as impartial observers during the execution of various contracts, drafting of documents, signing and authentication processes, as well as in legal procedures aimed at preventing fraud in real estate and financial transactions.

Before participating in any contract, act or legal event that requires their intervention, they offer advice to avoid litigation and unnecessary expenses.

The signing of any document before a notary provides the certainty that the contract is final, not susceptible to change and legally valid.
